Top Five IP Communications Trends of 2013

January 09, 2013

By now, you’ve probably read or skimmed a multitude of predictions for how this year will play out in the IP communications industry. It’s hard to know for certain, but analysts and prognosticators are using a mix of data, history and their own inner compasses to forecast the biggest telecom trends for 2013. The folks at managed network services company AireSpring (News - Alert) are no exception.

“Here at AireSpring, we’ve pulled out the old Magic 8 Ball to give you an exclusive glimpse into the future of the telecommunications industry,” wrote AireSpring’s Jon Beadle in a recent blog post.

Hosted PBX (News - Alert) and cloud communications are two technologies that will be embraced by more businesses in the coming year. Beadle’s five telecom predictions for 2013 are as follows:

  1. 2013 will be the year of the hosted PBX as more and more businesses joyously embrace the efficiency and savings of a managed phone solution.
  2. Companies with two or more locations will experience a sudden revelation that MPLS isn’t as confusing as they think. This epiphany will lead a greater number of companies to take advantage of a secure, multi-location network.
  3. Expect to see the cloud everywhere, Beadle said, especially in the office as cloud hosted IP PBX brings a new level of flexibility to office communications.
  4. An increasing amount of high bandwidth video traffic will force companies to abandon their old DSL and T-1 connections. In their time of need, these companies will turn in record numbers to high speed dedicated Internet and Ethernet over Copper to deliver the bandwidth that their business demands and at increasingly lower rates.
  5. TDM will rapidly phase down, leaving customers to wonder how much longer their old copper network will be supported at all.

“At AireSpring, we’re already seeing more customers than ever before switching to SIP trunking and VoIP solutions over Ethernet,” Beadle said.

In other IP communications news, Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd. has announced that Vision Technologies Aerospace Incorporated has completed the acquisition of 100 percent equity interest in Volant Aerospace, TMCnet reported.

The acquisition was completed following the fulfillment of customary conditions precedent. Following the acquisition, Volant will become a wholly owned subsidiary of VT Aerospace.
