What is IP Communications?

August 07, 2012

IP Communications is the phrase used to describe networks that use the IP protocol for voice and video traffic, or the principle communications standard used for transmitting data across an internetwork using the Internet Protocol Suite.

The IP Communications industry has seen its series of ebbs and flows over the years, particularly as trends like VoIP and video conferencing begin to become more ubiquitous. IP Communications is one the largest growing industries in the tech space and as the industry matures so too does the role of IP Communications.

Historically, IP was the connectionless datagram service in the original Transmission Control Program, which was established in 1974. The first major version of IP, which is now referred to as Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4, has become the leading protocol of the Internet. The latest version, Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6), is steadily growing in popularity. IP Communications converges data, voice and video onto a single network.

One of the main benefits of IP Communications is the technology’s reliability as the Internet Protocols assume that inherently the network is unreliable. Moreover, the belief is that there exists no central monitoring or performance measurement facility that can track and oversee the state of the network. IP Communications solves this problem by providing the best delivery and reliable services.

In addition, IP Communications helps complete IP addressing and routing, two typically complex processes. IP Addressing refers to the process in which end hosts become assigned IP addresses and sub networks of IP host addresses become divided and then grouped together. IP routing allows for IP datagram forwarding across IP connected networks.

Through advances with IP Communications, SIP has been able to take off. SIP builds upon the IP Communications foundation by providing a standards-based approach to enabling IP communication with numerous devices and applications, according to industry experts. The benefit to customers is that they get even stronger IP Communications.
